Abyssinian

Abyssinian Cat

Karin Langner-Bahmann, Gustav chocolate, CC BY-SA 3.

The Abyssinian is an extremely affectionate, loyal and people orientated cat who lives to play. Life will never be boring with an Aby, as they are affectionately known.

A great choice for a family with children of at least school age who will have the energy and stamina to match.

If there is one breed that can turn ardent dog lovers over to our feline friends then the Aby is it.

The Abyssinian loves human company and will follow his guardians around making sure that he IS included in whatever is going on.

He will frequently sit on your magazine so that you do not read too much and suffer eye strain or knock that mouse off the desk so that you do not work too hard – he is very considerate and caring like that ! He may even give you a break and just look down at you from his high perch, taking in everything that you are doing, Abys are excellent people watchers.

He will greet you enthusiastically with his quiet trill rather than a loud meow if you have been out. A simple stroke, or scratch behind the ears may not suffice and you will need to demonstrate that you are just as pleased to see him with a little welcome play time.

If you are likely to leave him alone for any length of time or the family is out at work or school all day, then it is highly recommended that he has a companion as Abys can get very lonely and bored if left on their own. Ideally this should be another Aby who would share his level of activity and enthusiasm for play

Abys may be affectionate but they do not really like to be held or carried around, and they are most certainly not lap cats. However, they will sit on your lap or most likely curl up beside you when exhausted.

The Aby really does love to play and needs to be provided with plenty of stimulation. He will readily learn new tricks, often playing fetch, carrying his ball around after you until you get the message. He will welcome the attention of children so long as he is treated with the utmost respect. Even cat friendly dogs will be tolerated so long as they understand the family hierarchy and the dogs lowly position within it.

Abys love heights and they should be provided with climbing frames, tall scratching posts, cat trees or an environment where they can freely climb and look down on their surroundings. They love to explore those supposedly out of bounds hidden nooks and crannies. If you think you can hide anything from your Aby, think again !

They would love the great outdoors with their boundless energy and inquisitive and curious nature but this should be considered very carefully for their own safety. They are a stunningly beautiful breed that would be an easy target even if they did not get into problems through their own endeavours as they have a tendency to roam. We would highly recommend a cat safe outdoor run, enclosure or escape proof cat fencing. A regular wall or fence is not much of a challenge for any cat let alone an Abyssinian. Why not consider training your Aby to walk on a leash just in case YOU are not getting enough exercise at home ; )

If you are keeping your Aby safe and indoors only, consider placing a birder feeder or table outside near the window for extra stimulation as Abys love to bird watch.

Summary

The Abyssinian is an extremely affectionate, gentle and loyal breed who needs to be given plenty of attention and plenty of space due to their activity levels. Therefore a small confined apartment is really not a suitable home.

If you have a quiet or elderly household that just wants a cat companion to slowly wander around the house, sit in front of the fire or on your lap whilst you watch TV then the Aby is definitely NOT for you.

If they are properly cared for they make excellent pet companions, and you will never be lonely with an Aby. It is highly recommended that they too have a companion, for those times when you are out of the home. Two Abys are better than one!
